ANPERC Faculty Exhibit their work at the KAUST Circular Carbon Initiative ExpoIn Dec 2020, Kaust hosted the KAUST Circular Carbon Initiative Expo. During the event, exhibitors showcased their research into Circular Carbon Economy (CCE) technology solutions. Prof. Volker C. Vahrenkamp and Prof. Thomas Finkbeiner, from Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center, exhibited their work on CO2 and Geothermal Subsurface Solutions – Closing the Cycle.

Dr. Thomas Finkbeiner appointed a Research ProfessorCongratulations to Dr. Thomas Finkbeiner on being promoted to a Research Professor, effective Jan. 1, 2021. Dr. Finkbeiner received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Stanford University. He joined King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in January of 2016 in the Ali Al Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center (ANPERC). His research focuses on rock and geo-mechanics, rock physics for oil and gas, and renewable energies.

ANPERC’s SEG EVOLVE 2020 KAUST TEAM WINS THREE CATEGORIES AT THE SEG EVOLVE 2020 PROGRAMCongratulations to our SEG EVOLVE 2020 KAUST team on putting up an exceptional performance and winning three categories at the SEG EVOLVE 2020 program: Best Investment Opportunity in Eugene Island, GOM, Best Map – Kingdom, and Easiest To Work With team. The team comprising of ANPERC students and Faculty represented KAUST at the SEG EVOLVE 2020 program as one of the 25 teams selected from around the world. Team members included: Teyyuba Adigozalova- Team lead and Petrophysicist (MSc in ERPE), Indra Arifianto- Geologist/Geophysicist (Ph.D. in ErSE), Andika Perbawa-Geophysicist Mentor (Ph.D. in ErSE), Elmir Abilov- Reservoir Engineer (MSc in ERPE), and Professor Abdulkader M. Alafifi- Faculty Advisor.

ANPERC scientists investigate the potential for carbon sequestration in Saudi Arabia by the process of mineral carbonation of basaltsA team of ANPERC scientists led by Professors Afifi and Hoteit is investigating the potential for carbon sequestration in Saudi Arabia by the process of mineral carbonation of basalts. They recently conducted five days of field studies in the Jizan area of southwest Saudi Arabia to study outcrops of volcanic rocks that are candidates for permanent disposal of CO2 emitted from power and desalination plants in the area. Participants included Aboud Afifi, Hussein Hoteit, Froukje Van Der Zwan, Jakub Fedorik, Ali Altammar, and Murtadha Al Malallah.
