Underwater Compressed Air Energy Storage: Research Highlights

Dr. Musa Aliyu and the visiting student Nicolás Cárdenas Acevedo from the RockGem group collaborated with CMR on their novel field experiment to test Underwater Compressed Air Energy Storage (UWCAES) offshore KAUST near KAEC.

They submerged a system engineered in the KAUST labs to a depth of 50 m to compress and decompress air, unveiling the feasibility of generating electricity with stored compressed air.

The initial results are promising, and further offshore tests are planned by adding sensors to their equipment and going to even greater depths!
