APG: Arabian Plate Geology

APG1

A deeper understanding of the geology is fundamental to exploration for and recovery of natural energy and mineral resources.  It is also essential for minimizing environmental impact through sequestration of greenhouse gases, exploiting geothermal energy, and predicting natural hazards from earthquakes and volcanoes.

The APG conducts geoscientific research on a variety of regional geology topics, combining data from field studies, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, biostratigraphy, oceanography and remote sensing.  Many of these studies involve collaboration with oil companies and other researchers worldwide.

Current research interests include:

  • Controls on regional hydrocarbon migration and entrapment in the Arabian Platform. 
  • Evolution of the Red Sea spanning regional basement and salt tectonics, stratigraphy, structure, paleoenvironments, and reef development. 
  • Structure, geodynamics, and hydrothermal processes along Red Sea axis and mid-ocean ridge.
  • Tectonics and strike slip structures along the Gulf of Aqaba. 
  • Ediacaran stratigraphy and structure of the Arabian Plate. 
  • Hydrothermal mineral deposits in the Arabian Shield and Red Sea. 
  • Volcanic and unconventional geothermal energy sources.

  • 3D Arabia: Compilation and visualization of the geology of the Arabian plate.
