ANPERC was privileged to host Professor Leonardo Guimarães, Full Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, for a 3-day visit on the invitation of Research Professor Thomas Finkbeiner.
Professor Guimarães was also joined by Ph.D. student Ximena Alejandra Rodríguez Florez, who was a Visiting Student at ANPERC in 2022 and conducted research in ANPERC's Rock Mechanics Lab.
During the visit, Professor Guimarães had the opportunity to visit ANPERC facilities, share experiences and research with our students, and present a special seminar entitled: Numerical Modeling of Water/CO2 Injection in Deformable Reservoirs with the Possibility of Fault Reactivation.
We spoke with Professor Guimarães and Ph.D. student Ximena about their experience while at ANPERC:
"I had the
privilege of visiting ANPERC at KAUST to follow the doctoral work of my
student, Ximena Alejandra Rodríguez Florez, in
collaboration with Prof. Thomas Finkbeiner. During the visit, we discussed the
next steps and expanded the scope for future collaborations.
I was impressed by the very international
environment, with professors, scientists, engineers and students from all over
the world discussing and working on relevant topics such as CO2 sequestration
and storage and renewable energy, fundamental for the energy transition that
the whole world must face towards a more sustainable future.
At ANPERC's Rock Mechanics Lab, where Ximena
conducted her research, I was able to see unique equipment, developed at the
university itself, that try to capture and clarify the complex interactions
between injected fluids and fractured rocks. In addition, KAUST has a powerful
and impressive laboratory infrastructure concentrated in the Core Labs, which
adds great value to the research carried out. I was delighted with the quantity
and quality of equipment available to researchers.
I was able to enjoy a dynamic environment geared
towards the exchange of ideas, as well as the extraordinary hospitality shown
by all professors, postdocs, students and staff throughout my visit. I hope to
have the privilege of returning another time in order to increase the
collaboration with the research that we develop here in Brazil."
- Professor Leonardo Guimarães.
“The experience of living on the KAUST campus and the professional support for my doctorate gave me incredible multicultural growth. The University is welcoming and feels like a big family that has members from more than 100 nationalities. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my academic advisors, Prof. Leonardo and Prof. Thomas, for their trust that allowed this academic collaboration to succeed.”- Ximena Alejandra Rodríguez Florez
