"[Geophysicists] have become very much secluded in our science." SEG Honorary Lecturer Maria Angela Capello's Special Seminar at KAUST on Wednesday has people talking about what the future holds for geophysicists. Among her insights about science communication and the growing role of geophysicists in humanitarian efforts, she asked the controversial question "Do we still need to explore?" Her sources ranged from industry statistics to popular fiction to her own experience in the field, making a broad assessment of a field dominated by highly specific technical problems.
Capello did not come to KAUST merely to stand behind a podium. Her special session after the seminar on women in geophysics and afternoon tea with ANPERC students brought her long and exciting career in Venezuela and Kuwait to life. "Everyone puts tags on people's foreheads. Taking that tag off is the most dangerous thing we can do," she explained to a group of students in the library café. Special thanks are in order for Dr. Viswasanthi Chandra, Andika Perbawa, and everyone else at ANPERC who made Capello's brief time at KAUST so valuable to students and faculty.
Capello is the latest speaker of many to come to KAUST. To stay updated about more seminars and other future events, check the ANPERC events page.
