Among the most important oil and gas technology conferences in the Middle East, the SPE KSA Technical Symposium and Exhibition (SPE ATS&E), which took place the last week of April in Dammam, featured ANPERC’s leadership sharing key insights into the future of the global oil and gas economy.

Patzek_260pxProfessor Tadeusz W. Patzek, ANPERC Center Director, was part of the Executive Panel Discussion together with Nasir K. Al-Naimi, Vice President of Petroleum Engineering & Development in Saudi Aramco, Ashok Belani, Executive Vice President Technology in Schlumberger, Kishore Sundararajan, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President Engineering in GE Oil and Gas, Federico Justus, President of Regions Operations in Weatherford, and Dr. Ali Al-Meshari, Manager of EXPEC Advance Research Center in Saudi Aramco.

The conference included talks about the Future of Energy, Oil and Gas and the Economy in the industry using new technology through research.

During his discussion, Patzek drew attention to the increasing pressures on the oil and gas industry, and the critical role that indsutry organizations like SPE and academic institutions like KAUST and ANPERC must play going forward.

“With severe constraints on cash flow and investment opportunities, the oil and gas industry will have to change ways in which it conducts business.  A new consensus needs to emerge in the industry and SPE on how to move away from the current difficulties.  Once the industry begins to understand where it might go, academia will help and provide the next crew to carry out the oil and gas recovery schemes of the future,” he said.

The Executive Panel Session, a focal point for the entire conference, consisted of a short talk on a fundamental problem Executive Panel_SPEKSAin theoretical or applied fields, followed by breakout sessions for each member of the Executive Panel to provide their point of view as well as questions comimg from young people interested in joining the petroleum industry.

“Young people asked me why they should join the petroleum industry,
and I answered that for me it was a life-changing decision because I was willing to discover new things and I was ready for the adventure,” Professor Patzek said.
