The Rock & Geomechanics (RockGem) research group led by ANPERC Research Professor Thomas Finkbeiner investigates (geo-) mechanical behaviors of fractured reservoir rocks (both carbonates and clastics) under drilling, completion, and production conditions and explores how these factors impact reservoir fluid flow and production. Results from our research activities – conducted mainly in our state-of-the-art rock mechanics laboratory and in the field provide disruptive insights into the constitutive behavior of rocks and associated fluid flow models. We also map regional, plate-scale in situ stress patterns – with emphasis on the Arabian plate using advanced numerical and analytical methods and calibrate these with available field data.
The group is also highly involved in research related to the Circular Carbon Economy (CCE), and produces in-depth studies on renewable energies that incorporate carbon sequestration and utilization, storage, and geothermal solutions.
Available Postdoctoral Fellow Positions
We are currently recruiting dedicated and passionate Postdoctoral Fellows to further extend our research in the following areas:
- Near wellbore coupled phenomena in challenging lithologies and structural settings using advanced numerical modeling techniques
- Experimental rock mechanics and rock physics with particular focus on fluid substitution in porous rocks
- Fluid transport in fractured rock based on laboratory experiments and numerical models.
We are looking for individuals who are highly intelligent, articulate, passionate and want to make a difference to the world we live in.
The living and working conditions at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology are exceptional. Our secure campus is a "live and work" community in a beautiful setting on the Red Sea and is home to over 7000 professionals, students, academics and their families. From an academic perspective, KAUST has unrivaled research facilities, world renowned academics, and already has the fastest growing citation record in the world.
