Job Description

The Digital Subsurface Flow & Transport Lab (DSFT-Lab) is a cross-discipline team led by Prof. Bicheng Yan in the Ali I. Al-Naimi Petroleum Engineering Research Center (ANPERC) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). DSFT aims to develop next-generation modeling and digitization technologies related to subsurface energy recovery and environmental processes.

We are currently hiring dedicated postdoctoral fellows to perform advanced research in two different initiatives happening in DSFT.

Initiative I is the data-driven modeling initiative focusing on developing state-of-the-art data-driven algorithms and workflows to improve predictive modeling and optimization efficiency as we manage the processes of hydrocarbon production, geothermal recovery and geologic carbon sequestration in the Kingdom and the world.

Initiative II is the physics-driven modeling initiative dedicated to developing advanced reservoir simulation techniques to simulate coupled processes with multiphase & multi-components flow, thermal transport and geomechanics in complex heterogeneous geological porous media

Basic Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field

  • Trackable publication records of peer-review journals

  • Communication ability demonstrated by publications and oral presentations at conferences

Desired qualifications:

  • Good understanding about the physics of multiphase flow in porous media
  • Familiar with programming languages such as FORTRAN, C/C++, MATLAB, Python
  • Experience in developing machine/deep learning models or reduced order models (Initiative I)
  • Experience in developing workflows related to data assimilation and optimization (Initiative I)
  • Experience in physics-based reservoir simulator development, related to numerical discretization, mesh generation, numerical solvers, and coupled simulation (Initiative II)

Salary & Benefits:

  • Competitive salary, benefits of housing, medical, children school an vacation.
  • Funding support to attend international conferences;
  • Great opportunities to pursue innovation/social/economic development via startups;
  • World-class energy research center with high-performance computing and advanced lab facilities;
  • Beautiful “live and work” community side by the Red Sea with excellent sports and recreational facilities.

DSFT seeks self-motivated, dedicated and creative researchers who want to address challenging energy and environmental-related engineering problems.

Interested candidates should send their CV to bicheng.yan@kaust.edu.sa and shuyu.sun@kaust.edu.sa

The position will be physically located in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. Located on the shores of the beautiful Red Sea, KAUST offers world-class research infrastructure, competitive salary and benefits, great opportunities to pursue innovation/social/economic development via startups.
