Dr. Robert Mellors

Seismologist, LLNL

Biography

Dr. Mellors is a seismologist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where he conducts research on seismology and geophysics related to geothermal exploration and production.  He also coordinates the LLNL geothermal program. A recent interest is the use of distributed acoustic sensing using fiber optic sensors to measure seismic waves. Prior to joining LLNL in 2010, Dr. Mellors taught 3D seismic interpretation, seismic reflection processing, geophysical field methods, and computational geoscience at San Diego State University (SDSU).  Research included earthquake location from local networks, deformation monitoring using satellite radar, and mud volcanoes caused by natural gas emissions. Education includes a BS in geology (Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio), an MS in geophysics (Cornell University, Ithaca, NY) and a Ph. D in 1995 (seismology, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN). He is an author on 51 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, numerous abstracts, and an open-source InSAR processing package (GMTSAR).
