ANPERC faculty and scientists, in particular Thomas Finkbeiner and others, have been collaborating for over a year with JAMSTEC, the Japanese Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. Earlier in the year an article in Nature covered an expedition that drilled deeper into the suboceanic crust than ever before. Now Arab News has picked up the story, giving further insight into the aims and accomplishments of the project, and the unique challenges it faces. Thomas Finkbeiner: "The geology and the environment is very challenging. Nobody has ever tried to drill a wel so deep in such a seismogenic region before."
